History

CIT was founded in 1928 and since that time it has been known under a number of different names. It has been a statutory authority since 4 January 1988[2] under Canberra Institute of Technology Act 1987.

Courses offered

CIT is a registered training organisation[3] and a public vocational education and training (VET) provider and therefore offers qualifications across the full VET range. This includes statement of attainment (short course), certificate I, II, III and IV, diploma and advanced diploma.

Qualifications in these categories are managed by the Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF) which is the national set of standards which assures nationally consistent, high-quality training and assessment services for the clients of Australia’s vocational education and training system[4].

In addition, CIT is also an accredited provider of higher education, and has permission to deliver graduate certificates, graduate diplomas and bachelor degrees and is promoted through the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC)[5] . Students in these courses may be eligible to receive FEE HELP[6] (formerly HECS) in the same way university students can.

CIT’s course offerings span a range of industries from business, information technology, tourism and hospitality, beauty, hairdressing, creative industries, trades, science, engineering, horticulture, health and indigenous studies[7].

Some courses at CIT can be undertaken via Flexible Learning where students do not have to study according to a semester-based timetable[8].

Student numbers

In 2009 CIT had 26,941[9] student enrolments. Compared to the other education institutions in the ACT ([[University of Canberra, Australian National University, Australian Catholic University and the University of NSW at the Australian Defence Force Academy) CIT is the largest by student numbers.

In 2009 75 students studied Bachelor and Graduate Diploma qualifications, 6,443 students studied Advanced Diploma and Diploma qualifications, 3,564 students studied Certificate IV qualifications, 5,690 students studied Certificate III qualifications, 2,866 students studied Certificate I and II qualifications, and 8,303 students studied statements of attainment and other courses. In 2009 2,315 international students studied at CIT.

CIT and other universities

CIT and the University of Canberra (UC): CIT and UC collaborate on a number of initiatives, most prominently of pathways and transfers between the two institutions. CIT students who complete a diploma or advanced diploma are guaranteed an offer of a place in an undergraduate degree at the University of Canberra[10].

In addition, over 150 formal credit transfer arrangements[11] are in place where students can receive credit for CIT studies and reduce the number of units they need to study at UC.

CIT and the University of Canberra also form two thirds of the collaborative organisation, the National Centre for Forensic Studies[12], in conjunction with the Australian Federal Police. According to the National Centre for Forensic Studies’ website, this partnership exists to collaborate in the design, development and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate courses leading to academic qualifications in forensic studies.

CIT and the Australian National University (ANU): collaborate on the delivery of two Associate degree programs – the Bachelor of Science and the Bachelor of Engineering, whereby students complete the first year of the degree at CIT and the second at ANU. Further, graduates automatically gain entry into a ‘linked’ ANU Bachelor Degree with 18 months credit[13].

CIT and Charles Sturt University (CSU): CIT and CSU collaboratively deliver two bachelor degrees – the Bachelor of Business[14] and the Bachelor of Information Technology [15]. These are delivered wholly at CIT in Canberra. CIT and CSU also have a number of formalised credit transfer agreements whereby graduates of CIT’s Diploma / Advanced Diploma programs receive credit when they commence a linked CSU degree[16].

CIT and the Academy of Interactive Entertainment (AIE): CIT and AIE jointly deliver a number of programs including the Bachelor of Games and Virtual Worlds (Programming)[17].
